Lotus 1

American Lotus Pod

I love holes so much I forget my partner is afraid of them. The darkness, the mystery, the feeling of falling they inspire, I feel held by them in my entirety. I found these holes one day in February walking in the wetlands of Concord Massachusetts with my friend Ben. To the side of the path, I thought I saw an old mushroom cap. I'm a forager but new to mushrooms, so I excitedly overturned this cap, expecting gills or a sponge and received holes, many many holes. I burst out laughing. I'd never seen a lotus pod before. Back in my studio, after a terrible incident where I showed my boyfriend the holes, I repeatedly painted them, just the holes, over and over, in small little patterns, enrapt by their power. I learned how Mark Rothko achieved his deep dark colors by thinning his paint and going over the same spots again and again, in that way, these holes were painted.
